The Arch Academy expects students to participate in its rigorous and challenging physical education program. Parental support, in this area of the school pedagogy, is critical to student success. The Arch Academy motivates students to become healthy individuals in mind and body and views athletics as an essential component to building healthy self esteem through high expectations. Each student participates in some form of physical education for a minimum of one hour per day, five days a week. Generally, this includes running and swimming, but may also include other sports and fitness challenges. The Presidential Fitness Challenge is held twice a year, usually in June and December.
Cove Swim SeasonThe Arch Academy students took part in an incredible activity; swimming the La Jolla Cove. This was the first of 5 monthly Cove swims scheduled for the summer. Students left the school, dressed in their wetsuits and flipflops, eating bagels and chattering about shark attacks and various other scenarios. Upon arrival at the Cove, everyone was full of excitement, nerves, and anticipation. As the parents stayed nervously on the shore, every student jumped into the water and began to swim. Some swam a half mile, some swam one mile, and others swam two miles; all the way to La Jolla Shores and back to the Cove. Each of the students worked hard and spent a tremendous amount of energy. There were smiles on everyone’s faces as the students trudged out of the water, freezing cold, but happy and proud of their accomplishment.
Thank you to all of the parents who participated in the Cove swim. By either bringing food, kayaking, swimming, or staying on the shore, you were all an incredible help to the The Arch Academy students. Without your support, this event would not have been so successful. Everyone is excited and training for the next swim. The Arch Academy students will continue to be challenged by moving up a level in their swim. They can’t wait for the next opportunity to hit the water again! The Arch Academy hosted its annual Swimathon on January 13th, 2010 at the Cameron Family YMCA in Santee. The students and staff were able to swim a combined total of 3,911 laps. We were able to raise over $5,736.60 for this year’s Big Bear Trip. John P. swam a whopping 247 laps-by far the most swam by any student (or staff member!).
