The Arch Academy Teams Place Second at Regionals, Qualify for Nationals in Washington
Monday, 08 March 2010 14:51

As Arch Academy and all the other schools eagerly await final confirmation of the results from this Saturday’s competition, unofficial results placed The Arch Academy in second place overall in both Division A(High School) and Division B (Middle School).  These results qualified both teams for the National Science Decathlon at Central Washington University on May 29, 2010.  All 19 Arch Academy students who participated also received ribbons in at least one of their individual events for placing in the top 5.
The high school pairing of Clayton and Harrison finished third in Tower Breaking, Joel and Joey B. finished second in Water Rocketry and Cranefly Rubber Band Powered Airplanes, Sam and Shawn finished second in Mousetrap Cars and fourth in GeoTrekker, and Brandon in Larry were regional champions in Amphibians in Reptiles, placed second in Marine Biology, and fourth in Four ‘N’ Six.
The second high school team had Christina and Lily win regional championships in Four ‘N’ Six and Robotics, and placed third in Chemical Observation. Lily paired with Jake to win a regional championship in Water Rocketry. The Arch Academy won another regional championship in Mousetrap Cars with Sean and Jake, and Sean partnered with Katie to place second in GeoTrekker and fourth in Tower Breaking. Abbi and Miri were paired together to win regional championships in Cranefly and Marine Biology, placed second in Amphibians and Reptiles, and added Jake to place third in  Scientific Method.
The middle school pairing of Aaron and Toby placed fifth in Four ‘N’ Six, and fourth in Scientific Method, Bridge Breaking, and Mousetrap Cars. The other partnership of Isaac and Joey H. were regional champions in Amphibians and Reptiles and is waiting to see if they placed in any events that were not announced at the Awards Ceremony. We’re waiting to hear if any results are updated and changed, and we’ll pass any new ribbons along when they arrive by mail.
Arch Academy science teacher, Jason, would like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered and contributed in some way to the success of the students at The Arch Academy. It was especially gratifying to see so many parents at the competition on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll be able to take as many students as possible to the National competition in 12 weeks.

Arch Academy to Compete Again in Regional Science Decathlon
Monday, 01 March 2010 15:04
The Arch Academy will be participating in the Grossmont College middle school and high school regional Science Decathlon competition. 20 Arch Academy students have been preparing for the event after school and on Saturdays. The competition will be much stronger this year with more than 22 teams from 15 different schools in southern California. Each student will be preparing with a partner for two to five different events including Amphibians and Reptiles, Marine Biology, Scientific Method, Cranefly Rubber Band Powered Airplanes, GeoTrekker, Tower Breaking, Mousetrap Cars, Four ‘N’ Six, Thirteen Test Tubes, Robotics, Water Rocketry, Bridge Breaking, and Chemical Observation. The event will take place on Saturday, March 6th with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:15 am and the day concludes with an awards ceremony scheduled for 2:00pm.
Last year, Arch Academy attended the regional competition of Science Decathlon with 15 students for the first time. Four pairs of students left as regional champions with the high school team placing second overall and the middle school team placing third. The kids had so much fun that they gathered even more students to prepare for the National Science Decathlon. The Arch Academy, 19 students strong, met the challenge and won 38 medals. The teams combined to win eight national championships and the high school team placed third overall.

Middle Schools Enjoy an Adventure with the “Grand Classroom”
Tuesday, 30 June 2009 15:39

RESCU Academy students from 4th through 8th grade adventured to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park from June 20th through June 24th. The students started the trip off bright and early in San Diego and flew directly to Salt Lake City, Utah. Although the weather was rainy and cold, the students did not hesitate to jump in the Great Salt Lake for a buoyant swim with their peers and chaperones.  Following their cold swim, the students were off on a long drive all through Utah, Idaho, and Montana.
The first trip on the agenda was the Norris Geyser Basin where the students were surprised how hot springs smelled like rotten eggs due to the sulfur content.  Students experienced several hot springs, Old Faithful, “paint pots’, and many live animals, including Bison, Elk, Deer, Moose, and Bald Eagles.

Students also visited the Grand Teton National Park where they enjoyed breathtaking views, adventurous hikes, and fun times in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  Students then put on their booties and life jacket as they floated down the Snake River, enjoying the scenic view from their rafts.
On the last day of the trip, students and chaperones worked together as they rowed and ventured down the rapids of the Snake River, wearing special rain gear and wetsuits.
It was a fantastic trip overall with many cherished memories and fun experiences.
See below to see pictures and read some of the students most memorable or favorite moments:

Isaac: “My favorite part of the trip is when we saw the mom and the baby moose at Jenny Lake.  The baby moose was very playful and fun to watch run around.”
Joey: “I have a lot of memorable moments- I loved the box lunches and when we saw the buffalo crossing the street! I also loved the river rafting”
CJ: “I loved Old Faithful and going white water rafting down the Snake River!”
